What happened to a government of laws, not of men?

Paco Enterprises: What happened to a government of laws, not of men?:

"And how long can a society stand when its own “elite” refuses to abide by the law? When the highest government officials commit lawless acts with impunity, does this not tend to wear down the ingrained lawfulness of the average citizen, in ways great and small? Leftists frequently like to characterize conservatives as extreme libertarians who cherish a return to some romanticized version of the old west, where men carried their freedom in their holsters. Wouldn't it be ironic if we do, indeed, wind up with a society along those lines because the High Sheriff decided that his tin star invested him with the divine right of kings?

Progressives must pretend the Americans they’ve hurt don’t exist

ObamaCare’s victims: The Supercut « Hot Air:

"The promise was never that some people would like some parts of Obamacare. The promise was it would work for everyone, no one would lose what they had and liked, and everyone’s premiums would go down— not rise more slowly, which they’re not either, but go down. Because they can’t meet their promises, they must pretend the Americans they’ve hurt don’t exist.

Progressives are really very disturbed people.

This Large Health Insurer Has Effectively Admitted Obamacare Is Failing | The Beacon:

"WellPoint dominates the exchanges. This news is an admission that the exchanges are seeing applicants too old and sick to keep premiums in line with what was originally expected.

The Obama administration is crowing that it has dragged six million people across the finish line into the exchanges by March 31 – or at least sort of. This, in itself, is no sign of success.

The fight over Obamacare exchanges has just begun. Whether the White House or the insurers win is hard to predict. Taxpayers will surely lose.

Runaway Regulation Is Destroying Wealth And The Economy - Investors.com:

"Of course, many regulations restricting pollution or ensuring product safety or reducing financial fraud are beneficial. We need common-sense guardrails to make sure everyone is playing by the rules. But increasingly the rules are Byzantine or even nonsensical, with little regard to whether benefits outweigh costs.

The left has long resisted cost-benefit analyses to make sure society is made better, not worse, by new rules. Or even when the agencies do perform cost-benefit analyses, the rule makers understate costs and exaggerate benefits in order to justify their intrusions.

Obamacare is not health insurance - just socialist control

The PJ Tatler » Study: Obama and the Democrats Disrupted the Whole Healthcare Industry for Just Two Million Uninsured:

"The Congressional Budget Office estimated that nearly all Obamacare sign-ups would be from the uninsured, not the insured. So the numbers coming in show, at a minimum, that Obamacare is not working as it was sold.

It probably is working as its architects intended, though, which was to destroy the private health insurance market over time and toss everyone into some form of single payer — socialist, government run — health care system.

Roosting chickens and Obama

Roosting chickens and Obama | Questions and Observations:

"The country must weather a little over 2 more years of this awful presidency and hope it survives it somehow.  If it survives it, one has to hope that upon reflection, the voters will realize that electing a president isn’t a beauty contest nor is it a venue within which to make a social statement.  “The first” this or that are not as important as the ability of the candidate to govern competently.  And, it is is certainly not a position in which the incumbent should be engaged in “on the job training”.

Hopefully these lessons have been learned and, in 2016, we’ll see a resurgence of common sense among the voting public.

The Politics of Climate Research Laid Bare

The Politics of Climate Research Laid Bare - The American Interest:

"Growth and sustainability aren’t, by nature (excuse the pun), mutually exclusive. In fact, green schemes work best when the two goals are pursued together, if only because the growth imperative is already so ingrained in the global economy. In that context, Tol’s point about the possible environmental benefits development entails is well taken. But this spat between scientists reminds us that the IPCC is a group of people. Scientists have egos, same as anyone else, and trying to distill a consensus viewpoint from a collection of them is bound to involve some kind of political wrangling. We understand climate change at its most basic level, but when you start adding politics, you open yourself up to more than just margins of error.

Zero Tolerance Hurts Kids and Ruins Schools - Reason.com:

"If your brain has more electrical activity than a bowl of lukewarm Jell-O, then you know why zero-tolerance policies are stupid. First, they ignore blatantly obvious distinctions. Gnawing a Pop-Tart into the rough silhouette of a gun does not turn it into a firearm. Breath mints are not a Schedule I narcotic. Fingers don’t fire projectiles.

Second, zero-tolerance policies don’t prevent the incidents they are designed to prevent. Deeply disturbed individuals who commit school massacres—the Dylan Klebolds and Adam Lanzas of the world—are not deterred by rules, and they do not commit mayhem with soap bubbles. So a rule that bans soap-bubble guns in school has zero effect on school violence.

Socialism & Communism are Hoaxes

Socialism & Communism are Hoaxes – False Collective Rights are Replacing Legitimate Individual Rights : Freedom Outpost:

"It's plain and simple. Every political ideology that supports collectivism over the liberty and rights of each and every individual citizen is a hoax. Socialism and Communism have proven to be total failures. Social Liberalism, as the Democrats practice and push in this country today, is well on its way to proving the same truth. Entitlements, created to buy votes for the entrenched political class, have all but bankrupted the country.

Socialism and Communism in all their various forms are unworkable because they go against basic human values of individual freedom and rights; because they seize wealth from productive people and create dependency on government in those who are already unproductive. Under such a system, only those who hold political power, the politicians, bureaucrats and other apparatchiks of the power structure, enjoy true freedom. The rest of us must toe the mark."

"This is the same group that has been peddling the hysteria snake oil for years and threatening the imminent floating of polar bears all about the place. That it comes from the United Nations should be enough cause for healthy skepticism, but too many still take that international clown car seriously.

What the UN is really all about is global welfare and draining cash and influence from the better developed countries:

The poorest people in the world, who have had virtually nothing to do with causing global warming, will be high on the list of victims as climatic disruptions intensify, the report said. It cited a World Bank estimate that poor countries need as much as $100 billion a year to try to offset the effects of climate change; they are now getting, at best, a few billion dollars a year in such aid from rich countries.

Cronyism versus the free market

Cronyism versus the free market:

It’s time to end crony capitalist subsidies to all businesses, to kick loser industries off the public dole. In this, Washington’s current corporatist consensus offers a target-rich environment.
First on the chopping block should be the indefensible sugar program, which drives up the cost of sugar for Americans, puts taxpayer money at risk, and kills U.S. jobs, all to benefit a handful of politically connected sugar producers.
Next up, subsidies for uneconomic “renewable” energy industries like wind energy and ethanol; restrictions on fossil fuel exports, which function as a subsidy for manufacturers, who pay artificially low energy prices; and protection of “too big to fail” banks through the implicit promise of a bailout when things go south.
We are all better off thanks to the efforts of countless individual inventors, tinkerers, investors, entrepreneurs, and just plain folks who are finding better ways to do things every day. Keeping that lesson in mind, trusting people to order their own lives, should be our top priority. Communicating that message in a way that connects with people will be key to ensure that future is a bright one.
So death to the collusion of regulators and politically connected businesses shielding the big guys from new competitors! Long live the food trucks, the raw-milk dairy farmers, the hair braiders, the Mom-and-Pop tax preparers, and the next big thing now taking shape in someone’s garage!

Why Pastors Should Get Political

Why Pastors Should Get Political | BarbWire.com:

"The American church is losing battle after cultural battle. But, instead of becoming more bold, we’re becoming more timid. Just this week, I learned that the IRS is plowing ahead with plans to clamp down on conservative and religious non-profit groups. Yet, will pastors urge their congregations to resist? Will Christians bombard the administration with demands that the IRS cease its unlawful discrimination? I doubt it. But, as Pastor and Prophet Dietrich Bonhoeffer astutely observed, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” For once, the church should learn from its history, not repeat it.

A History of the Disastrous Global Warming Hoax

Paradigms and Demographics: A History of the Disastrous Global Warming Hoax:

"“Ridiculous claims—like the science is settled or the debate is over—triggered a growing realization that something was wrong.” When the global warming advocates began to tell people that cooling is caused by warming, the public has realized how absurd the entire UN climate change argument has been.

Worse, however, has been “the deliberate deceptions, misinformation, manipulation of records and misapplying scientific method and research” to pursue a political objective. Much of this is clearly unlawful, but it is unlikely that any of those who perpetrated the hoax will ever be punished and, in the case of Al Gore and the IPCC, they shared a Nobel Peace Prize.

We are all in debt to Dr. Ball and a score of his fellow scientists who exposed the lies and debunked the hoax; their numbers are growing with thousands of scientists signing petitions and participating in international conferences to expose this massive global deception."

All of this anger, shrillness, violent pathology, intolerance, rage, and rejection of logic coming from those who claim to be the most peceaful, tolerant, and rational members of society creates a paradox. How can a progressive claim to be rationale, and yet consistently favor discredited and unsustainable economic policies? How can a progressive claim to be tolerant, yet demand that all contrary opinion be shouted down and dissidents be jailed? How can a progressive claim to believe all races are equal, but demand that blacks and hispanics be treated as inferiors that need to be condescended to and acccommodated because they just can’t be expected to perform as well as white people if all are treated equally?  And the greatest paradox of all; how are progressive leftists so blind to their own contradictions and hypocrisy?

The Odious Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid

The Odious Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid « Commentary Magazine:

I wonder if people quite appreciate how disgusting this all is. Here we have two Democratic senators labeling a private citizen as being “un-American” because that citizen is vocally advocating public policies they disagree with.
Can you imagine the media (and Hollywood) firestorm if Senator Ted Cruz went to the Senate floor and repeatedly accused, say, Jeffrey Katzenberg of being “un-American”–and Mike Lee echoed the charge?
It’s worth considering, too, the corrupting effect on language these charges have. If advocating cuts in record-high federal spending and running ads opposing the Affordable Care Act are deemed to be “un-American,” where exactly does this all end? Allowing powerful senators like Reid and Schumer to smear private citizens in this way further undermines our political and civic life. Liberals will deem Obamacare a failure only if it stops making them feel good about themselves.

"The post-American world will be many things, but multilateral isn't one of them. There will be no world government and international organizations will be good for little except sucking up the last drops of wealth and prestige of the United States. It will be a chaotic place with everyone out for themselves.
None of this has to happen, but it will if the same bad decisions continue to be made. If eight years of Obama are topped by eight years of Hillary, this is where we will end up. If the European Union continues to drag down the continent, if multilateralism continues to be the great obsession of the elites, if bad economics and bad strategy continue destroying nations, then this will be one of the better outcomes.
The civilized world faces economic, demographic and military crises that it has a limited time frame in which to meet and resolve. If it fails to do that, the civilization in which we have grown up and which we have known all our lives will die and a long interregnum of darkness will follow in its wake. "

However, when the EPA pays millions to panel members charged with reviewing EPA regulations, it doesn’t even raise an eyebrow.

Does Our System Select for Incompetent Sociopaths?

Does Our System Select for Incompetent Sociopaths? | Zero Hedge:

In broader terms, we might add: the tendency of power to manifest hubris, arrogance, bullying, deception and the substitution of rule by Elites for rule of law.Natural selection isn't only operative in Nature; it is equally operative in human organizations, economies and societies.People respond to whatever set of incentives and disincentives are present. If deceiving and conning others is heavily incentivized, while integrity and honesty are punished, people will gravitate to running cons and embezzlement schemes. What behaviors does our Status Quo reward? Misrepresentation, obfuscation, legalized looting, embezzlement, fraud, a variety of cons, gaming the system, deviousness, lying and cleverly designed deceptions.Let's connect the pathology of power and the behaviors selected by our Status Quo. What we end up with is a system that selects for a specific category of sociopaths: those whose only competence is in running cons.No wonder we have a leadership that is selected not for competence but for deviousness. What's incentivized in our system is spinning half-truths and propaganda with a straight face and running cons that entrench the pathology of power. What is the shelf life of a system that rewards confidence-gaming sociopaths rather than competence? Unless we change the incentives and disincentives, the system is doomed.

"It used to be the power to tax was the power to destroy, increasingly, it’s becoming the power to permit.  Admittedly, good governance and good government demand that the jurisdiction of the federal government be clarified through a rule-making, as opposed to mere guidance.  Greater clarity is needed for the agency to do its job properly and for the public, industry, states and local governments to understand where the federal government’s authority under the Act begins and ends.  The challenge for the Agency is not only whether this rule will pass legal muster but whether the Agency can be entrusted to exercise its enormous authorities competently, fairly and judiciously.  Only time will tell.

Why is everyone so afraid of Obama?

Why is everyone so afraid of Obama?:

"There are many answers to that question.

America’s powerful cultural institutions – the press, the entertainment industry, the foundations, the schools and universities, etc. – like what he is doing. They were taken over a long time ago by a worldview that is anti-American, anti-God and anti-truth. That was the result of a determined long march through the cultural institutions by so-called “progressives” that was designed to make political power fall into the hands of someone like Barack Obama.
For generations now, America’s education establishment has not been about teaching intrinsic values, American history as a triumph of liberty, eternal truths and the ability to learn. Instead it has fostered unlearning, non-learning, a form of indoctrination that would turn young people into sheep headed for the shearer.
Government is an institution always ready to assert itself into the moral vacuum when the foundation of self-government breaks down.
I have a feeling even Barack Obama is surprised by how much he has been able to accomplish in tearing America down in less than six years. It’s because he had a lot of help before that six years began.

America was ripe for the taking.

Current Sham Party System

A vote felt 'round the world:

"This week, the Pledge-to-Impeach mobilization surpassed its first significant milestone. The Pledge-to-Impeach movement aims to turn the 2014 election into a vote of no confidence in the present administration of the U.S. government. More importantly, it aims to rouse grassroots Americans to challenge and circumvent the current sham party system, which has both parties in the grip of elitist forces bent on overthrowing constitutional government of, by, and for the American people.

Nothing confirms the intent of these elitists more decisively than the orchestration of public perception (propaganda) continually under way in the elitist faction media. After the parody of conservatism that was the recent "C"PAC gathering in Washington, D.C., I drew attention to the fact that the elitist faction leadership that presently controls the GOP has declared war to extinction on the authentic conservatives who make up the vital core of the party's base. These are voters still loyal to the U.S. Constitution and its principles, as articulated in the American Declaration of Independence.

Mau-Mauing Paul Ryan

Mau-Mauing Paul Ryan | The American Spectator:

"Invincible ignorance combines bad faith to preempt any such discussions of important issues such as the breakdown of the social fabric.

Back to Paul Ryan’s basic point. It is unassailable. George Will, in his column on the controversy, reminds his readers that today “41 percent of all American children are born out of wedlock; almost half of all first births are to unmarried women, as are 54 percent and 72 percent of all Hispanic and black births, respectively.” And these figures are much, much worse than in 1965 when Daniel Patrick Moynihan created a controversy with his report on the state of the black family. Back then, 23.6 percent of black children were born to single women, compared to just 3.07 percent of white children. Today, the numbers are horrible for all demographic groups but especially African-Americans.

One reason so many liberal progressives hate to see this issue raised in the public square is that it points to a problem that may not be within the power of politics and activist government to solve. This is not to say we should ignore sound economic and social policy. But the disorder in our communities reflects a disorder in our souls. Another Great Awakening, anyone?

Why Government Does Not Function

Warning Signs: Why Government Does Not Function:

"What is forgotten or never learned is that there are elements of risk in everything we do. Trying to legislate risk out of our lives only leaves us with millions of rules that make it impossible to function intelligently in business, in schools, in hospitals and nursing homes, and everywhere else. It eliminates swings and seesaws from playgrounds out of fear of lawsuits.

“America is losing its soul,” says Howard. “Instead of creating legal structures that support our values, Americans are abandoning our values in deference to the bureaucratic structures.” Too often, decisions made by elected officials or reflected referendums voted upon by the public have been taken over by the court system in which judges now feel free to decide these matters. The response was a growing objection to “judicial activism.” Now even the judges are distrusted.

6 Wars of the 20th Century Dostoevsky Predicted

PJ Lifestyle » 6 Wars of the 20th Century Dostoevsky Predicted:

Few people in the last 200 years understood human nature and mankind’s fallen state quite like Dostoevsky. His uncanny abilities to dissect the pathology of a killer or the spiritual joy of a contented Russian peasant have inspired generations of writers, thinkers, and even psychologists for a century and a half.
But more than simply being an insightful novelist on the human condition, Dostoevsky turned out to be a truly prophetic voice in his predictions of the dangerous and deadly places where certain ideologies and philosophies popular at the time would lead his beloved Russia in particular, and the modern Western world in general.
In the course of a number of his books – The Devils (aka The Possessed) and The Brothers Karamazov, for example – he foretold of the coming socioeconomic and geopolitical nightmares that awaited 20th century societies that would adopt progressivism, nihilism, and socialism as their guiding principles. His words carry with them a deeper weight since Dostoevsky lived during his youth as a progressive ideologue eventually sentenced first to death and then, after a mock execution meant to “get his attention,” to four years of hard labor in Siberia.
He returned a deeply religious man and, after spending a few years in Europe investigating the teachings of leading Western intellectuals, a vehement anti-socialist.
In describing the underlying motivations of the young, radical, rabble-rousing character Peter Verkhovensky in The Devils, Dostoevsky said:
He’s a kind, well-meaning boy, and awfully sensitive…But let me tell you, the whole trouble stems from immaturity and sentimentality! It’s not the practical aspects of socialism that fascinate him, but its emotional appeal – its idealism –what we may call its mystical, religious aspect – its romanticism…and on top of that, he just parrots other people.
Only someone who has known the “other side” of the psychological lines, commiserating among those who wish to tear civilizations and their institutions down from within, can write with such creative specificity.
But again, Dostoevsky’s strength remains the predictive quality of his novels. He identified the strategies the Left would use in the 20th century and their final destinations. Three of these nightmare prophecies stand out: the war on the family, the replacement of old theistic religions for a new (thoroughly secular) one, and the extermination of millions of citizens on behalf of “the cause.”

Inside the Republican Database Behind David Jolly's Upset Victory - NationalJournal.com:

"To hear Republican strategists involved with David Jolly's campaign tell it, the newest Republican in Congress owes his victory to a "Honeybadger." That's what officials at National Republican Congressional Committee call the voter database they've spent a year tirelessly building from scratch, a system they argue was essential to Jolly's surprising win in last week's special election in Florida.

In details shared exclusively with National Journal, leaders at the NRCC described a first-of-its-kind political operation deployed on behalf of a Republican congressional candidate. Led by Honeybadger, a continually updating system that integrates real-time data with existing voter files, they say they were able to track voters they had to target, discover what messages would motivate them to go to the polls, and project exactly how much ground Jolly had to recover when early absentee voting didn't swing his way.

Strategists with the House GOP's political arm aren't shy about touting its impact, either: Without the cutting-edge effort, they profess, the newly-minted congressman would be looking for a new job this week instead of heading to Washington.
